The bastard sword, the revival of the longsword!
The bastard sword appeared in the 1350's. Derived from the long swords, the particularity of this sword was that it had a longer pommel than a classic sword.
Depending on the situation or the knight's preference, the bastard sword could be used with either one or two hands. That's why it gradually took the place of the longsword, and the term Bastard Sword became synonymous with the longsword!
Another theory about the name of the sword (but this one has not been confirmed by historians) would come from the fact that during a fight, the knight could decide to abandon his shield and at the same time his colors.
For the time, this attitude, considered dishonorable, would have led to the nickname of the bastard sword.
