This is a so called "eating awl", an ancestor of the modern fork. In medieval times the people used to dine by using fingers. Nobility and the clergy oftentimes used awls in early medieval times, but it wasn't before the high medieval times, that cutlery became more popular.

The grip is twisted and browned. A very nice accessory for every mans' medieval kitchen.
