The forest had gone suddenly quiet.
The guardian stopped beneath the old oak and listened. Somewhere beyond the trees, a branch snapped. She quietly reached for the dagger tucked into her belt, its small size making it easy to draw without disturbing the rest of her gear.
There was no time to reach for her sword and the sound could give her position away. Whatever was moving through the undergrowth was already too close so she had to move fast.
In a quite steady motion she stepped away from the path readying for an attack. A moment later, a shadow rushed between the trees and she threw.
The small blade struck the ground directly in front of the stranger, stopping him in his tracks. As he looked down at the dagger then back toward the trees where she vanished, almost as if she was never even there. He then realized this time was a warning.
Some weapons are made to win battles. Others are made for the moment when a quiet warning is all that is needed.
